What is AFib or AF (Atrial Fibrillation)

Atrial Fibrillation is also called AF or AFib it is a heart disease in which fluttering and irregular heartbeat which leads to heart stroke, blood clots, heart failure, and other heart diseases. Normally our heart relaxes to a normal beat and then contracts. But in this atrial fibrillation, the atria of heart which lies in the upper chamber of it beat irregularly instead of beating efficiently to move blood in the ventricles.

If a blood clot gets break then enters into the bloodstream and abide in an artery which leads to brain as a result of it a stroke occurs. Many people are unaware that this AFib is a very serious disease and if not treated properly at the right time then it can be the reason behind getting other heart diseases. It increases the 5 fold risk of heart stroke.

This AFib may come and go, otherwise you have it or your loved ones have it and it does not go away also require a proper exceptional treatment. The atrial fibrillation is not usually a life threatening but it is a serious condition that requires emergency treatment. It develops the blood clots within the upper chamber of heart and flows in the blood throughout the body that leads to blocked blood flow known as ischemia.

If a person has this then he or she may feel shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, weakness and pain in the chest, etc. You have high risk of getting a stroke when your heartbeat is out of sync and make group in some parts of heart in the blood also form clots. Strokes related to atrial fibrillation become more deadly and serious.

Symptoms:

Some person has this AFib have no symptoms and unaware from this condition until it is diagnosed by a doctor. And you may have experience symptoms and signs described below:

  • iv. Weakness
  • v. Shortness of breath
  • vi. Lightheadedness
  • vii. Palpitations
  • viii. Less ability to exercise

Causes of AFib:

Abnormalities of the heart and damage are the main cause of AFib but there are also other possible causes of it are listed below:

  • i. High blood pressure
  • ii. Lung diseases
  • iii. Sleep Apnea
  • iv. Denudation to stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, medications
  • v. Sick Sinus Syndrome
  • vi. Overactive thyroid gland
  • vii. Inadmissible metabolic rate
  • viii. Stress due to other illness, pneumonia and surgery
  • ┬áix. Heart Attack
  • x. Abnormal Heart Valves
  • xi. Viral Infections
  • xii. Coronary Artery Disease

Treatment:

If any person has this then the treatment will depend on how severe symptoms are and what are the causes of them. The main goal of the treatment is to stop the abnormal or irregular heartbeats also make it less for anyone to have any stroke.

Blood Thinners:

There are new blood thinners in the market that are recommended over the warfarin. And the name of it is NOACs (non vitamin K oral anticoagulants) and it is easy to take than warfarin. They are safe to use and are effective.

Watchman:

It is a new device that has been approved to prevent the stroke that has problems by using the blood thinner for long time period. This device is placed in a part of the heart for the prevention of blood clots from moving from heart to the rest part of body.

Preventive Measures:

Eat a healthy diet. Quit smoking. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. Reduce stress and anger.
